Whey vs. Vegan Protein

Know Your Protein Drink Options

Most SMART consumers are already aware of the benefits of whey vs. organic vegetarian (vegan) protein. These benefits include cleaner extraction methods (our vegan Proteini uses water to extract the proteins) and they are easier to absorb. In addition, plant protein powders are generally not packed with sugar or other artificial sweetener such as acesulfame K. What is acesulfame K? Please refer to Google for some scary reading.

On a larger level, plant protein also makes the most sense. At Smart Pressed, we try our best to minimize carbon footprints. That’s why we are made locally in Long Beach, California for our many original juicers based in Southern California.

But why on earth are we talking about pollution on a blog about vegan protein? According to published EPA data, industrial dairy agriculture is one of more harmful, polluting industries to our planet. Based on the latest USDA data, there are 8.67 million milk cows used to produced milk in 2015. Imagine 8.67 million cows worth of manure! Manure gives off methane, which pollutes the air with methane, a greenhouse gas. It then gets washed down by rain and pollute our water supply. There is also the additional energy and waste incurred from processing plants, transport and mass farming (cows are fed grains and a corn based diet, meaning additional resources have to be expended to grow the corn to feed them).

On the opposite end, we have organic farming, which is the backbone of each and every one of our products. Organic farmers focuses on sustainability and minimizing impact to the environment. Every process of our organic vegan protein sources, from seed production and organic fertilizer, comply with the QAI and the USDA’s stringent Organic Farming procedures. Basically, when consuming organic protein, we are creating less demand for the “polluting” protein. Furthermore, all USDA certified products (like Smart Pressed Juice and cleanse kits) are GMO-free.

Lastly is the problem of “body pollution” – most cows are given antibiotics, hormones and many other chemical concoctions designed to maximize output. Since whey is produced from the milk produced from these cows, these chemicals are passed down to the final product. No thanks!
