The Top Five SCARIEST Things About Traditional Juice Cleanses That You Didn’t Know

With Halloween just around the corner, we thought it would be a good time to look at the top five most frightening things about traditional juice cleanses that you might not know.

1. Traditional Juice Cleanses are Total Sugar Infusions
Contrary to popular belief, not all vegetable and fruit juices are actually healthy. Many of them have as much five times as much sugar as a chocolate chip cookie, according to HuffPost! Depending on the types of juices you are choosing and your method of cleansing, you could be taking your body on a sugar roller coaster ride. Certain fruits and vegetables, when concentrated in juices, can cause an abrupt rise in your blood sugar in just a few ounces! This is true whether you’re making the juice at home, buying it at a juice bar, or purchasing it in the form of a ready-to-drink bottle.

Once a sugary juice is ingested, the sudden flood of sugar into the body causes the pancreas to respond by releasing a large amount of insulin, which in turn causes the blood sugar levels to drop back down. The result? That tell-tale sugar “crash” that shows up as low energy and feeling “hangry.” Modern studies have shown that over time, a diet that is high in sugar increases your risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, obesity (leading to diabetes) and even cancer. Taxing your body by forcing it to react to a quick jolt of sugar will eventually result in insulin resistance, which can then lead to Type 2 diabetes.

2. Juicing Can Blow Your Kitchen Up
Ok, so we don’t mean that literally. But be prepared for your kitchen to look like a war zone, if you’re making your own juices. There can be a lot of prep work – and a lot of clean up. Aside from the time it’ll take to shop and find fresh, clean produce you want to juice, you’ll also be spending significant time on prepping, cleaning and washing. If you don’t like rinsing or chopping vegetables, pre-bagged veggies can save time, but won’t always look or taste fresh (or be organic, which we’ll get to in a bit). And once you are done with the juicing part, you get to cleaning part – scrubbing down the machine or washing the blades and parts and cleaning up juice and veggie bits from the counter and the floor.

4. Traditional Juice Cleanses Are Expensive
If you’re buying a juicing company’s pre-bottled juice cleanse, be prepared to spend close to $200, if not more, according to Forbes. Even worse, most juice cleanses are not organic, which brings us to . . .

5. Traditional juice cleanses are Full of Toxins
The number one scariest thing about most traditional juice cleanses is the huge amount of pesticides you ingest if you’re not using all organic produce. It is hard, if not almost impossible, to find a juice cleanse company that uses USDA-certified organic produce. Yet juice cleanses contain such high concentration of fruits and vegetables – juicers are literally drinking about 5-10 times more varieties and quantities of fruits and veggies they normally would ingest at once – that it’s crucial to go organic.

Indeed, many of our favorite fruits and veggies for juicing fall under what is called “The Dirty Dozen” by the President’s Cancer Panel due to its high pesticide content. These Dirty Dozen produce include kale, spinach, strawberries, apples, blueberries and celery – things that most juicers love using in their juices and smoothies! Do yourself a favor – always choose organic produce if you are planning on making your own juices, or search for an USDA certified organic juice cleanse so you’re not drinking a pesticide cocktail. Cheers!
