How To Prevent Catching A Cold During Cold & Flu Season

October is here, Fall is in full swing and you’re enjoying ALL the pumpkin spice things!

Sounds like the perfect cozy start to Fall.

But, there’s one thing that comes along with all the fun....

Okay let’s be real- cold and flu season is simply the worst! Especially if you have kids, schools are literally germ central! Go ahead, ask a parent...they’ll tell you ALL the horror stories of how they had a strong immune system until they had kids that brought home bacteria and coughed directly into their faces.

Yes, it’s a tough world when cold and flu season rolls in. Even if you’re not a parent it can be tough because you end up having to miss work, you errands get delayed, your house is a mess because you feel terrible and it simply is just NOT fun when you’re sick. Just so many things go downhill when you catch a cold. Some colds are easier to fight off than others, but it just depends on your immune system.

What if we told you that there are ways to help decrease your chances of catching a cold during cold and flu season?

This is not a drill!

Sit down (if you’re not already) and grab a notepad because we’re about to give you ALL the deets on how you can survive cold and flu season!

First off, there are many factors that can lead you to easily catch a cold like not getting enough sleep, stress and ultimately- your diet!

Now, we’re not saying you’ll 100% avoid a cold because let’s face it, germs are germs, but there are ways to boost your immune system in order to help fight off colds faster or if you’re lucky you might not even catch one.

Here are our 5 Tips To Help Prevent Catching A Cold:

1. Wash your hands and sanitize!

Did you know that cold and flu viruses can live on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours? Yikes! This is why you need to wash your hands frequently. No, not just a quick dip in the water- we mean real hand washing with soap for about 20 seconds in order to fully have clean hands. If you simply don’t have access to running water that frequently then carry a hand sanitizer with you. The reason why washing your hands often is a great tip is because you can touch so many germs and bacteria throughout your day without even noticing. Be mindful of how often you touch your face and mouth.

Pro Tip: For the next hour try keeping track of how many times you touch your face (eyes and mouth in particular) you’ll see what we mean. Once you become mindful of trying not to touch your face and mouth to avoid the spread of germs and bacteria it’ll be easier to avoid catching a cold if you’re around someone that is sick.

2. Keep stress to a minimum and rest!

Too much stress with little sleep can drastically affect your immune system. Not sleeping enough can also cause your body to be less on alert and not be able to heal as quickly. The human body regenerates while you are sleeping, so if you’re not getting enough rest then it might make it easier for you to catch a cold and it can also take you longer to fight off a cold or virus once you’ve been exposed.

Pro Tip: Try getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep per night and meditate or do something that will help you relax to de-stress and help keep your immune system ready to fight off and bacteria that tries to come at you.

3. Reduce alcohol and sugar intake.

Drinking alcohol dehydrates the body plus it can also put you at risk of getting other illnesses as a long term effect. So this would actually decrease your immunity and your overall health. Sugar is also a culprit in lowering your chances of fighting off bacteria and viruses. We know candy, pumpkin spice lattes and all things sweet are delish- but a little less of that can improve your health as well.

Pro Tip: Hydrate with water all day, everyday! Try to keep your sugar and junk food intake to a minimum to keep immunity level up.

4. Take your vitamins and probiotics!

You hear it at your doctor’s office and you hear it from your mom or grandma- load up on vitamins! Here’s the thing, while there is nothing wrong with supplementing your health with a basic multi-vitamin, it is called a supplement for a reason. You still need to be eating a healthy well-balanced diet, but a boost of vitamins can sometimes go a long way. If you want to take the vitamin route then we highly recommend taking Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and a probiotic to help keep your gut flora healthy and ready to fight off any bacteria that dares to enter your immune system!

Pro Tip: Supplement your daily diet with either a multivitamin or with Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Zinc and even a probiotic every single day to help boost your immune system during cold and flu season.

5. Eat your fruits and veggies!

You can get ALL your vitamins and minerals from plant foods like fruits and veggies! Fruits and vegetables are filled with phytonutrients- they’re basically nature’s food with super powers. Phytonutrients are so powerful that you can instantly help fight off colds and viruses with eating an abundance of fruits and vegetables. So load up on your fruits and veggies to steer clear from catching a nasty cold.

Pro Tip: Add a fruit or vegetable of choice into every meal throughout your day to help feed your body natural vitamins and minerals from plant foods!
