1. Wash your hands and sanitize!

Did you know that cold and flu viruses can live on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours? Yikes! This is why you need to wash your hands frequently. No, not just a quick dip in the water- we mean real hand washing with soap for about 20 seconds in order to fully have clean hands. If you simply don’t have access to running water that frequently then carry a hand sanitizer with you. The reason why washing your hands often is a great tip is because you can touch so many germs and bacteria throughout your day without even noticing. Be mindful of how often you touch your face and mouth. 

 

Pro Tip: For the next hour try keeping track of how many times you touch your face (eyes and mouth in particular) you’ll see what we mean. Once you become mindful of trying not to touch your face and mouth to avoid the spread of germs and bacteria it’ll be easier to avoid catching a cold if you’re around someone that is sick.

 

2. Keep stress to a minimum and rest!

Too much stress with little sleep can drastically affect your immune system. Not sleeping enough can also cause your body to be less on alert and not be able to heal as quickly. The human body regenerates while you are sleeping, so if you’re not getting enough rest then it might make it easier for you to catch a cold and it can also take you longer to fight off a cold or virus once you’ve been exposed.

 

Pro Tip: Try getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep per night and meditate or do something that will help you relax to de-stress and help keep your immune system ready to fight off and bacteria that tries to come at you.

 

3. Reduce alcohol and sugar intake.

Drinking alcohol dehydrates the body plus it can also put you at risk of getting other illnesses as a long term effect. So this would actually decrease your immunity and your overall health. Sugar is also a culprit in lowering your chances of fighting off bacteria and viruses. We know candy, pumpkin spice lattes and all things sweet are delish- but a little less of that can improve your health as well.

 

Pro Tip: Hydrate with water all day, everyday! Try to keep your sugar and junk food intake to a minimum to keep immunity level up.
