According to a study commissioned by the National Coffee Association, about 3,000 Americans were surveyed and it turns out that 64 percent of Americans drink a cup of coffee every single day! The percentage has increased from 62 percent since 2017, which also turns out to be the highest percentage since 2012.

 

So yeah- we’re not the only coffee lovers on the planet and that’s OK.

How Does Coffee Actually Work?

 

Coffee contains caffeine, when caffeine enters your bloodstream it takes as little as ten minutes to react as a stimulant. According to Dana Hunnes, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.D., senior dietician at UCLA Medical Center, caffeine binds to adenosine receptors in the brain. Adenosine is a nervous system depressant, meaning its presence suppresses arousal and promotes sleep. However, once caffeine comes into the picture, the adenosine’s effects are weakened which then causes stimulation. Once caffeine is ingested it increases brain activity which then causes your adrenaline to kick in. Adrenaline is basically what causes you to gain that extra burst of energy as well as be focused and alert.


How Coffee Affects Your Body Everyday


As delicious and soothing a cup of coffee first thing in the morning is, it might not be the best for your body if you drink it every single day- more than once a day.
