If you are anything like us, you might be a little hard on yourself sometimes. We frequently beat ourselves up for not being as fit, strong or accomplished as we would like. Or we feel really bad about not sticking to a health goal we have set for ourselves. Well, it’s time to let go of negative self-judgments. Ask yourself if these negative views are helpful or productive in your life, and shut that stuff down. It’s time to learn the power of affirmations. The world’s foremost leaders, athletes, business people all have this in common- they have affirmations. An affirmation is a statement or short sentence that is positive in nature that you repeat to yourself. Known as an effective motivational tool, affirmations can be personalized to meet an individual’s needs. For example, if success is an underlying theme in your life, you can repeat statements that have to do with being successful.

Here is how to use positive affirmations to energize and empower yourself:

Select an affirmation to fit the occasion. If you’re looking for optimal health, choose statements that focus on how you envision yourself feeling once you achieve your goal. If you want to begin eating healthier, recite an affirmation that talks about you harnessing the power of clean, organic foods in your diet.

  1. There are many different types of affirmations. Find the ones that speak to you and the occasion, so you can write them out or print them out before reciting the statements or short sentences. You can also buy affirmation card decks that are themed and decorated.

  2. If you have a mirror available, sit in front of it. Look at your reflection. See the marvelous person staring back at you. Think of all you’ve been through and how that shaped you into the person you are today. Get to know your face by memory and honor your image in the mirror by saying a quick “Thank you!”.  You’ll start to feel a sudden shift in your mood right away. Being kind and loving to one’s self is very empowering!

  3. Start reciting your chosen affirmations. Take a minute to let each one sink in. Speak to your present self by using the words “I am”. Try saying, “I am smart,” “I am powerful,” “I am capable,” “I am worthy,” and “I am loved,” along with any other affirmations you’ve selected. Notice your breathing as you recite the statements. Do you feel relaxed? Is your posture different? Are you sitting up straight?

  4. Put your affirmations in a place where they’ll be safe until you read them again. You may want to keep a list on your computer, tablet or phone. You might decide to write them out on an index card to keep in your wallet, bag or purse. That way, when you want to access the powerful sentences and statements, you can. Some people always carry affirmations with them as a stress-relieving tool.

Affirmations have the power to lift your spirits and speak to your soul. They give you the courage that you need to shine. They require no work to access and can be transferred to paper or cardstock, so you can carry them around. When recited regularly, they are known to energize and empower people.

Decide which affirmations speak directly to you. You’ll find examples of the powerful sentences and statements throughout the internet. Some websites even offer free printable versions of the affirmations that they list for you to use.
